Getting to Murchison Falls national park is very simple like getting to other protected areas either by car or by road transport .The park is positioned in the northern region of Uganda and in the north west of Kampala the main city of Uganda .Murchison Falls national park is governed by the body responsible for all the protected areas in Uganda known as ‘’UWA’’ Uganda Wildlife Authority and it is surrounded by several districts such as Masindi ,Kiryandongo and Nwoya.The park’s land spreads towards Lake Albert and over the Bunyoro escarpment and around Karuma falls wildlife reserve.
Despite the fact that, Murchison Falls national park is the oldest and the largest national park in Uganda with an area of over 3840 square kilometers followed by Queen Elizabeth national park which covers 1978 square kilometers. The park adjacent more of its land with over 748 square kilometers wide of Bugungu wildlife reserve and 720 square kilometers of Karuma falls wildlife reserve all together make up the vast Murchison falls conservation area.
The park is located on low latitude of 2,187499 and longitude of 31,781400 from the major latitude.
Getting to Murchison Falls
Murchison falls national park can be accessed either by road or by air from Entebbe international airport to Pakuba airstrip within the park. Accessing it by road transport from different park gates, entering from the northern part or southern gates.
Travel by Road Transport
Traveling by road transport is extremely interesting has you go wondering about the country side, scenic land scape among others.
From Kampala you can access Murchison falls national park either by private means for example a self-drive or organized pick up from Entebbe international airport by the tour operator. The journey is a three-hour drive of 305 kilometers distance to Masindi town. Then from Masindi town, you continue to drive to the main route that access you in Kachumbanyobo gate, Masindi town to Kachumbanyobo is about 85 kilometers and goes through Kaniyo Pabidi forest to Paraa in the southern part of Murchison falls national park.
You can decide to use Bugungu gate which leads you to the southern part of the Murchison falls national park, which is 135 kilometers longer than locating to Kichumbanyobo route the most scenic and interesting route with great views of Budongo forest and the rift valley escarpment.
The park is attached with several protected gates; You can still access Murchison falls national park through the northern gates of Wankwar, Chobe, Mumbako and Tangi gates which lies in the northern side across the River Nile. This northern gates are favorable for the travelers from Gulu or from Kidepo Valley national park.
Accessing Tangi gate is just 110 kilometers from Karuma falls bridge along Pakwach road. The tangi gate is out reached by the visitors going to the northern part of the park, through a marram poor road with curfew at 16:00 hours and beyond 13:00 hour you cannot drive out of tangi gate. From Karuma falls bridge to tangi gate it is a 3 hours’ drive distance.
Travel by Air
Murchison falls national park can also be reached by air transport through different airstrip and airfields like Pakuba, Bugungu and Chobe Airfield. Bugungu air field is most convenient for travelers traveling to Paraa in the southern part of Murchison Falls national park. This is convenient to the visitors who choose to book their sleeping accommodation at Red Chili Safari Camp, Nile Camp and Simba Safari camp.
You can fly to Chobe air filed located adjacent to Chobe safari lodge in the northern side of the park.
You can book the chartered or scheduled aircrafts that operates domestic trips to the regional national parks in Uganda by either Eagle airlines and Aero link among the rest. The Aero link Uganda can be booked right from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airport just close to each other’s. All the flight bookings, pick-ups and drops can be done by the help of the trust worthy tour operator.
Air transport is convenient and less tiring compared to the road transport. Though road transport is much more exciting with rewardable sights of scenic landscape.
